"A very capable man if I may say so, Ludo," commented Elizabeth, as the chauffeur-driven Mercedes moved smoothly away from the front of the impressive Dutch Colonial-styled building. "Long may his capabilities continue."
"You need have no further worries, Elizabeth dear. Kiebliek has his instructions. While Anders appears to improve health-wise, his mind will deteriorate accordingly. Furthermore—and as Kiebliek told you—Anders is no longer Anders Gudmundsen. From the moment he was checked into the clinic, he lost all former identity." Meyer gave a wry chuckle. "We'd better get used to referring to Guest Six Hundred and Sixty-Six—or 666—rather a remarkable coincidence, don't you think?"
"At this stage I prefer not to think," sniped Elizabeth. "Albeit he be 666, 777, or 888!" Giving a snort, she added sarcastically, "How fortuitous he isn't a nein, nein, nein!"
"Hardly, my dear, and as you've just commented, Kiebliek appears to be very capable and once again let me assure you"—he gave a giggle—"Guest 666's demise is guaranteed."
"In spite of your constant reassurances, Ludo," snapped Elizabeth, "at this moment of time Anders is looking more like the after of a 'Before and After' advertisement! Not only has he filled out, he's positively glowing with health! In other words it could easily turn into a serious case of No! No! No!—or nein, nein, nein to any suggested treatments." She gave a snort. "When I said I didn't wish to arrive in South Africa with a bag of bones I didn't expect a Phoenix to arise from the ashes!"
Rolling his eyes, Meyer turned his attention to the lush, passing scenery. "I must say it is exceedingly beautiful," he observed.
"I trust that little comment is all embracing," came the stinging reply. Turning to face the little man, Elizabeth added acidly, "Next hurdle—and possibly the most difficult of them all—is meeting up with my sister this evening. Here I'm seriously relying on Thinus having had a serious talk with her following our little debacle on the phone."
"I'm sure he has… ah! It looks as if we've arrived."
"Pretty," remarked Elizabeth gazing at the white-painted facade of the elegant hotel. "What did you say the name was?"
"Alphen."
"Alphen?" repeated Elizabeth, "How apt."
"Apt, Elizabeth?"
"Seeing we're on a somewhat slippery slope at the moment, Ludo."
"Sorry, I'm not with you?"
"Think Alphen, as in Alphen, Colorado where Thinus and I go skiing every year!" snickered Elizabeth. "There you encounter some very slippery slopes whereas here I have a horrible feeling the slope—or slopes—are about to become even more slippery!"
